A Star Is Born

From THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER:

Hollywood Reporter 'Star' to be born in new light
Warner Bros. restoring George Cukor's 1954 film
By Carolyn Giardina
May 23, 2008, 01:00 AM

Warner Bros. Motion Picture Imaging is restoring George Cukor's
1954 "A Star Is Born" in 6K resolution.

The film, starring Judy Garland and James Mason, is believed to be
the first restoration project where the scanning, restoration work and mastering will be completed at that resolution.

Digital film restoration is most commonly accomplished at 2K, though an increasing number have been using 4K. A 4K file contains four times as much picture information -- measured in pixels -- as a 2K file, and 6K contains 2 1/4 times as much as a 4K file.

Featured Artists:
Doug Katsaros, conductor

In its World premiere, “Judy Garland In Concert” brings together the legendary Judy Garland and the symphonic sound of the Boston Pops through historic footage and modern technology!

The legendary voice of Judy and the symphonic sound of the Boston Pops combine in this remarkable concert event to present her dynamic life in song. Breakthrough technology allows a seamless blend of historic visual footage and film with her own vocals, accompanied by the orchestra playing classic arrangements of her iconic songs. Share in the timeless classic that is Judy Garland.

Looks like it'll be a fantastic event, similar to the SINATRA and ELVIS shows that played Radio City Music Hall and the London Palladium, respectively.

It's nice to know that these days historical places such as these are still being recognized.

Starring newcomer Anthony Martinez

Note: We haven't seen this show,
but it does have adult themes and is probably not for the small kiddies! :)
Per the producer: "...the show is a Drama that borders on a Dramedy.  It is extremely respectful relative to [Judy Garland].  The plot is around a teenager who is at his wits end (bordering on the suicidal) due to the constant abuse he suffers at home and at school.  He finds his only solace in the records of Judy Garland on the phonograph in his basement.  As things get worse for him Judy appears to provide him with the guidance, support, and encouragement he has been missing his whole life.  Though she is only visible to him there is not one point that show ever descends to caricature or mockery.  Literally Judy saves this kid’s life."

I've received an advance copy of the set, and I must say that it's well worth getting. Not only is it the first set since 1998's "Judy" boxed set to cover such a wide spectrum of Judy's career, but it's also beatifully produced and packaged.

More importantly, there are many previously unreleased recordings that are absolute jewels. Plus we get some favorites that are newly remastered!

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the entire set, especially all of the radio tracks (which comprise all of disc two), a few of my initlal favorites are: The 1953 Columbia recordings in surround sound; the 1943 radio version of "Over The Rainbow"; the 1938 MGM radio disc version of "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot"; Judy's own composition "Love's New Sweet Song" from 1941 (written with husband David Rose); "Daddy" also from 1941; and all of the MGM Records tracks.

This is a definitie "must have" for all Garland fans!

Classic Musicals

Broadway Melody
April 3, 2008: The boxed set will still be available April 8th. However, as we had suspected Warner Home Video is only offering the boxed set. The titles will not be sold separately as originally planned. :(

The latest news from Warner Home Video, via a recent press release, is that the "Classic Musicals From The Dream Factory, Volume 3" boxed set is now going to be released in the "3rd quarter". Originally the set was scheduled for April 8th (2nd quarter), but now they're releasing the Frank Sinatra sets during that time instead.

No new street date for the set has been announced yet.

More on DVD!

Till The Clouds Roll By02-06-08 UPDATE: It's been confirmed by the recent Warner Home Video press release about the Sinatra collections that the inclusion of MGM: When The Lion Roars is just an excerpt included on the re-packaged DVD to 1945's Anchors Aweigh - not the complete 3 part documentary. No word on any proposed release date of the entire documentary, although when the That's Entertainment! series was released on DVD in the fall of 2004, Warner Home Video SVP George Feltenstein confirmed that they had Lion Roars "ready for release" but were waiting for the right time.

Thanks to Dan for the tip!

FrankSinatra.com has reported that on May 13th, Warner Home Video will release several Sinatra boxed sets, which will include the new-to-DVD release of the 1992 documentary MGM: When The Lion Roars, and a repackaging of Till The Clouds Rolls By (see image at right).

Originally aired on the TNT (Turner Network Television) network in 1992, MGM: When The Lion Roars is an amazing documentary about the history of MGM. Patrick Stewart is the host and narrator, providing a touch of class as only he can. Filled with rare footage and interviews, this is the most comprehensive documentary every made about the studio. Judy, of course, is heavily featured.

Definitley a "must have" for any fan of Judy's and/or MGM. And if you get a chance to purchase the gorgeous companion coffee table (and out of print) book on eBay or some other used book seller, buy it - you won't regret it!

Clouds is sold separately. MGM: When The Lion Roars is also sold separately and is included in the boxed set "The Frank Sinatra & Gene Kelly Collection". At least, that's how we understand it right now. Hopefully the "Lion Roars" feature is the complete documentary and not an excerpt. (see note above)

Note: Notice how the cover art for the "Clouds" entry in this Sinatra collection features Judy on the cover, rather than Frank.

Carlyle Book
John Carlyle's memoirs are now available in paperback.

From Perseus Books:

Actor John Carlyle got his big break in 1954. New to Hollywood , the twenty-three-year-old Carlyle was cast as the assistant director of the movie-within-a movie in George Cukor's A Star is Born. Although Carlyle's scene was later cut from the film — and his star status subsequently never materialized — the job brought him in touch with Judy Garland, who up until her death fifteen years later was Carlyle's friend and sometime lover.

Under the Rainbow tells the story of this rocky but beloved relationship. No longer the great star who first enthralled Carlyle as an adolescent, Garland — like many former headliners in the 1960s — lived an often desperate, hand-to-mouth existence that was eased only by pills and liquor. She turned to Carlyle for support, even with the hope of marrying the openly gay actor. He politely declined the opportunity of matrimony, but remained constant in his adoration of the star for the rest of his life.

The author takes us on a rare, behind-the-scenes tour of gay Hollywood , with an intimate, often hilarious, star-studded memoir of the decline and end of old Hollywood.

MORE ABOUT THE GROVE CD

[01-04-08]: DRG has confirmed that the release date for "Garland At The Grove" has been re-scheduled to March 4th.

spacer

From "Arf! Mastering" (the folks who did the remastering of the "Garland At The Grove" CD):

"DRG Records has turned to Alan Silverman to remix and remaster the classic live performance by Judy Garland at the Grove in LA, recorded by Capitol Records in 1962. The original three-track master tapes were transferred at high resolution and sent to Arf! Algorithmix EQ and restoration tools helped bring the sound back to life and restore spectral imbalances in the original recording."

At The Grove
Image: Cover to the original 1959 album.

DRG will release the "complete" "Judy Garland At The Grove" on CD (for the first time!) on January 22, 2008.

"Judy Garland At The Grove" was the first official live Garland album ever released. It was recorded August 5, 1958 during Judy's final performance of her run at the Cocoanut Grove in the Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles, CA - with Freddy Martin and his Orchestra. By this last night, Judy's voice was suffering severe fatigue - but she's still wonderful! If Capitol had recorded the opening night's performance on July 23, 1958 it would have made for a better representation of Judy's appearance at the Grove, which garnered rave reviews.

Two tracks not included on the LP ("Day In, Day Out" and "I Can't Give You Anything But Love") were included in Capitol's 1991 boxed set "The One And Only" as was the complete version of "When You're Smiling" (The LP version was edited because Judy's microphone picked up feedback halfway through her performance - this was rectified with modern technology).
[CORRECTION: It's actually the "Overture" that is incomplete on the original LP - "When You're Smiling" is complete on the LP, the liner notes on "The One And Only" are incorrect.]

Five tracks were included in the the 2002 compilation "Classic Judy Garland - The Capitol Years: 1955 - 1965" ("Day In, Day Out"; "I Can't Give You Anything But Love"; "Purple People Eater", "When The Sun Comes Out"; and the previously unreleased "Do It Again").
