THE UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE OFFICIALLY
ANNOUNCES
THE JUDY GARLAND STAMP FOR 2006
From
the USPS web site
(click on image to see close-up of the stamp):
As the 12th inductee in the Postal Service's Legends
of Hollywood series, Judy Garland is considered by
many to be one of the greatest entertainers of the
20th century. An all-around performer, she acted with
equal effectiveness in comedy or drama, sang a varied
repertoire with unparalleled skill, and partnered with
the leading male dancers of her time, Gene Kelly and
Fred Astaire among them. Her show business colleagues
have been nearly unanimous in their praise of Garland's
natural brilliance - indeed, she was a "star of
stars."
Garland triumphed in most media of her era. She appeared
in 32 feature films, winning international fame as
Dorothy, the girl who rides a tornado from her home
in Kansas to an imaginary land in the 1939 musical The
Wizard of Oz. She also was a best-selling recording
artist who released more than a dozen albums and nearly
100 singles and made hundreds of radio broadcasts.
She starred in her own television show and made guest
appearances on many others. Her live performances,
widely regarded as her supreme showcase, frequently
broke box office records for theaters, concert halls,
and nightclubs.
Garland's extraordinary talent was honed from an early
age. She was born Frances Ethel Gumm, June 10, 1922,
in Grand Rapids, MN, where her father, Frank, managed
a theater, and her mother, Ethel, played the piano.
The family was musical: Frank and his wife billed themselves
as Jack and Virginia Lee, Sweet Southern Singers, and
their three daughters performed as The Gumm Sisters.
Frances made her professional debut at the age of two,
on December 26, 1924, first singing with her two older
sisters, Mary Jane and Virginia, and then delighting
the audience with a solo rendition of "Jingle
Bells." A laudatory review in a local newspaper
noted that "the two oldest girls are becoming
accomplished entertainers, while the work of Frances,
the two-year-old baby, was a genuine surprise."
In 1926, the family moved to California, settling in
Lancaster (north of Los Angeles) in 1927. In her new
home, "Baby" Gumm, as she was known, continued
to receive glowing reviews. As a student at Lawlor's
Hollywood Professional School, where she was enrolled
by her mother, Frances first met Mickey Rooney, also
a student. They first shared the bill at a Lawlor recital
in 1933.
The Gumm Sisters renamed themselves The Garland Sisters
in 1934 at the suggestion of entertainer George Jessel,
headliner at Chicago's Oriental Theatre when the girls
played there that year. Frances soon began to be called "Judy," a
name she chose after hearing it in a song, and was
signed in 1935 to a contract with MGM. She made her
network radio debut shortly thereafter.
It took some time to find an appropriate property for
the precociously talented girl who sang with the voice
of a woman, but within four years MGM had made Garland
a star. When the box office records for 1939 were posted,
two Garland movies, The Wizard of Oz and Babes
in Arms, were on the list of top 10 pictures. In
1940, Garland won a special Academy Award "for
her outstanding performance as a screen juvenile during
the past year" and one of the songs she sang in
the Wizard of Oz, "Over the Rainbow," won
the Oscar for "best song."
The movie, For Me and My Gal (1942), in which
Garland co-starred with Gene Kelly, set box office
records and received rave reviews. Garland had an even
bigger hit with Meet Me in St. Louis (1944),
in which she sang "The Trolley Song" and "Have
Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." She played
her first dramatic role in The Clock, released
the following year.
Garland vividly conveyed a range of emotions when performing,
and was felt by many who saw her in concert to erase
the line between popular and high art. She won a special
Tony Award for her storied run at New York's Palace
Theater beginning in 1951, and frequently moved audiences
to tears.
Garland received an Academy Award nomination as "best
actress" for her role in A Star Is Born,
the 1954 film in which she sang another of her signature
songs, "The Man That Got Away." She received
another Academy Award nomination for her supporting
role in the drama Judgment at Nuremberg (1961),
in which she played a German matron.
In April of 1961, Garland gave a concert in New York
City at Carnegie Hall that immediately became a show
business legend. The recording of that celebrated performance
topped sales lists for 13 weeks. "Judy at Carnegie
Hall" won five Grammy Awards in 1962, including
those for "album of the year" and for "best
female vocal performance."
A television special, "The Judy Garland Show," featuring
Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, was broadcast in 1962
and garnered several Emmy nominations. The following
year, Garland began work on her own series for the
CBS television network.
In addition to her many professional achievements,
Garland was also the mother of three accomplished children:
Liza Minnelli, Lorna Luft, and Joe Luft.
After her death on June 22, 1969, Judy Garland was
lauded around the world for enriching the lives of
her legion of fans. Many celebrated contemporary entertainers,
Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, and Bette Midler
among them, have hailed Garland as an inspiration and
influence.

October
2005: Variety includes Judy Garland in list of
100 icons of the past century.

In celebration of its 100th
anniversary, the "showbiz Bible" has put
out a list of the 100 top icons of the past 100 years.
Although Judy didn't make the top ten, she did rate
being included in the alphabetical list of the remaining
top 90.
Judy is mentioned in various articles and spotlights
in this special issue. Notably, in his article entitled "Collective
Memories", Andy Klein writes: "The Wizard
of Oz (1939) is head of the class in terms of overall
impact, but it doesn't say as much about tis period
as it does about America in General. Perhaps the moment
of the shift to color - with the line "Toto, I've
a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore" - or the
unmasking of "the man behind the curtain" is
the most universally rememered of its scenes, but not
single movie is more assumed to be known by everyone
everywhere.

Introducing the all new Judy Garland Discography.
October
3, 2005:
Welcome to The Judy Garland Online Discography!
Today is the inaugural day for this immense endeavor.
As you will see, our discography is far from complete.
It will be “in progress” for quite some
time as we complete the main sections, and add more
details and information to all of the pages. Please
read the following to see where we’re at as of
this date.
Decca Records: We have completed
the Decca Records section - For now.
Soundtracks: All of the major
compilation records and CDs for the Soundtracks section are
completed. We will add various new compilation pages in the
future as we progress deeper into documenting Judy’s
recordings. Of the pages for the individual films, only the
following are complete or semi-complete: Pigskin Parade, Meet
Me In St. Louis, Till The Clouds Roll By, The
Pirate, and Summer Stock. We will complete a
new film page(s) every few days or so, then move on to the
Capitol Records section.
Capitol Records: Once the Soundtracks
are done, we will move on to the Capitol Records section and
begin documenting all of Judy’s Capitol Records.
Miscellaneous: This is the
section where we will document the major records & CD
releases featuring Judy’s TV performances (excepting
the Capitol releases), as well as her radio performances.
Here we will also include various other releases that
might not fall into any particular category.
We hope that you will enjoy The Judy Garland
Online Discography. It is a labor of love
for us. We have always strived to collect and properly
catalog Judy’s recordings, and the Internet is
the perfect venue to accomplish this.
Be sure to check back for updates. And be sure to let
us know what you think, offer suggestions, and especially
provide information on records or CDs we may have missed
that you believe should be included. This discography
is for all of Judy’s fans to enjoy. We certainly
are having fun putting it together, and we hope that
you will have fun perusing through these pages.
Sincerely,
The Judy Garland Discography Team

“JUDY
GARLAND AND FRIENDS: DUETS” SET
FOR RELEASE ON SAVOY JAZZ AUGUST 9
Nine Unforgettable Musical Sequences Hand-Picked
From “The Judy Garland Show”
Six Previously Unreleased On CD
Stellar Lineup Includes Barbra Streisand, Lena Horne,
Mel Torme, Vic Damone, Count Basie, Martha Raye, and
More
(For Immediate Release:)
Legendary
music label Savoy Jazz is proud to announce the
release of "Judy Garland and Friends: Duets,” the
second in a series of high quality, hand-picked
compact disc performances taken from the soundtrack
of the 1963 CBS-TV series, “The Judy Garland
Show.”
Compiled by Emmy-winning producer/writer John Fricke,
the stellar set features nine unforgettable sequences
(six of which are previously unavailable on CD),
showcasing the talent of such entertainers as Barbra
Streisand, Lena Horne, Tony Bennett, Mel Torme, Count
Basie, Vic Damone and others, largely accompanied
by the acclaimed Mort Lindsey Orchestra. Also included
in the packaging are rare black and white photographs
taken from rehearsals and tapings of the Garland
series. “Judy Garland and Friends: Duets” reaches
stores on August 9.
“ Duets” arrives hot on the heels of
Savoy’s earlier collection this year, “That
Old Feeling”: Classic Ballads From “The
Judy Garland Show” -- a collection of twenty
songs also hand-picked from the soundtracks of Garland’s
CBS-TV series.
“ The Judy Garland Show” was a much-deserved
star vehicle for an artist now considered to be one
of the greatest, entertainers — if not the
greatest -- to hit the stage and screen. The series
is much revered for its fascinating showcasing of
Garland’s talent and the many, many stars that
appeared and indeed, paid homage to the legendary
performer. This new compilation provides an even
greater look at Judy’s joy in music…and
the heightened level of enthusiasm she achieved in
her teamings with both friends and with some of the
most timeless vocalists of the twentieth century.
Says John Fricke: "Savoy Jazz is genuinely dedicated
to the preservation and presentation of the best
of the great popular songbook and singers, and there
could be no better exemplification of their credo
than this release. There are thirty-five different
songs heard during these nine tracks, written by
the finest composers and lyricists of the mid-twentieth
century. To hear them sung ‘live' and with
amazing energy, musicality, and humor by this parade
of artists -- led by Judy herself -- is the very
best kind of rare aural and emotional treat."
Complete track listing is as follows: “Yes,
Indeed” w/Tony Bennett& Dick Shawn

Horne

About the Movie:
Adapted from L. Frank Baum’s timeless children’s
tale about a Kansas girl’s journey over the rainbow,
The Wizard of Oz opened at Loew’s Capitol Theatre
in New York on August 17, 1939. The film was directed
by Victor Fleming (who that same year directed Gone
With the Wind), produced by Mervyn LeRoy, and scored
by Herbert Stothart, with music and lyrics by Harold
Arlen and E. Y. Harburg. Ray Bolger appeared as the
Scarecrow; Bert Lahr as the Cowardly Lion, Jack Haley
as the Tin Woodman, and Frank Morgan was seen in six
different roles, including that of the "wonderful
Wizard" himself. Dorothy was portrayed by a 4'11" sixteen
year old girl who quickly earned her reputation as “the
world’s greatest entertainer” -- the incomparable
Judy Garland.
The Wizard of Oz received five Academy Award nominations,
including Best Picture, and captured two Oscars® – Best
Song (“Over the Rainbow”) and Best Original
Score -- plus a special award for Outstanding Juvenile
Performance by Judy Garland.
The Wizard of Oz was an overwhelming popular and critical
success upon its initial release and repeated its ability
to captivate audiences when M-G-M reissued the film
in 1949 and 1955. The film made a new kind of history
with its network television premiere in 1956 on CBS.
Nearly 45 million people tuned in for this initial
telecast, marking the beginning of a tradition. Ever
since, The Wizard of Oz has been shown virtually annually
on network (and then cable) television; its magical
story and heartfelt performances have enabled it to
grow from a perennial classic to its current status

The
Grammy's add Judy's Decca album of songs from Meet
Me In St. Louis (1944) to the Grammy Hall
Of Fame:
From the press release: "The Recording Academy
announced the newest additions to its GRAMMY Hall Of
Fame, adding 20 recordings to a timeless list that
now includes 659 titles. The Hall Of Fame serves as
a celebration and reminder of the triumphs and achievements
of the recording arts. Selections are drawn from all
major categories of music, acknowledging the diversity
of musical expression for which The Recording Academy
has become renowned."
The Grammy listing is as follows:
MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS — SOUNDTRACK
Judy Garland
Decca (1944)
Film & TV Soundtracks (Album)
NOTE: This
is a little misleading. The Decca album is actually
studio recordings of the songs from the film recorded
at the Decca Studios, NOT the performances as recorded
at MGM for the soundtrack of the film. "Original
Soundtrack" albums were still a few years away,
and it was common practice to make studio versions
of songs from films to sell on 78rpm records and in
albums of 4-78rpm records (8 songs total). Decca had
so much success with their Garland/Rooney Girl
Crazy (1943) album that they decided to make another "cast
album" of Meet
Me In St. Louis and later The Harvey Girls (1946).
MGM began making albums of original soundtrack performances
in 1946 with their release of Till
The Clouds Roll By on the new MGM Records
label in 1946. This effectively precluded Decca making
any "cast albums".
Judy's Decca version of "Over The Rainbow" was
inducted to the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1981, and her
album "Judy At Carnegie Hall" was inducted
in 1998.
