JUDY, JUDY, JULIE!!!
RISING STAR ALIGNS WITH CABARET'S NORTH STAR AT THE METROPOLITAN
ROOM IN MID JUNE
SAN FRANCISCO PHENOM JUDY BUTTERFIELD BRINGS HER OWN SOUND
TO THE SONGS OF YOUNG JUDY GARLAND AS JULIE WILSON SHINES
ON IN NEW ACT STARTING JUNE 13
From the press release:
In what promises to be a remarkable two-week span in mid
June, one of cabaret's most promising young talents and
the business's reigning high priestess of song will have
runs that coincide at the astronomically popular Metropolitan
Room, 34 West 22nd Street . Both are Metropolitan Room
debuts.
In her first major engagement in New York , Miss Judy
Butterfield, the 17-year-old prodigy from San Francisco
who made her New York debut last year at The Algonquin
Hotel's Oak Room, rockets into town with her electrifying
rendition of the music of a youthful Judy Garland. "Judy
Sings Judy: Songs of a Young Garland" premiered at
The Empire Plush Room in San Francisco and has recently
played sold-out dates in Los Angeles , Denver and Portland
. The show traces Garland 's meteoric rise from Minnesota
schoolgirl to Hollywood teen icon, including her early
stardom at MGM and the release of "Meet Me in St.
Louis ." A high school junior, Miss Butterfield is
a protégé of Andrea Marcovicci; her director is the L.A.-based
Clifford Bell. Her music director is Michael Lavine, with
whom she shares two duets in a Judy/Mickey interlude.
Described recently as a mix of Elizabeth Taylor and Scarlett
O'Hara, Butterfield, a 2007 MAC nominee (for best female
debut), was singled out as "a talent to watch, and
listen to" by Time Out NY when she played the Oak
Room for one night in December. "Judy Sings Judy:
Songs of a Young Garland" plays four shows only --
Sunday and Monday June 17, 18 at 7pm; Thursday and Friday
June 21, 22 at 10:30pm (Cover $ 20)
If it hasn't already been said about Julie Wilson then
it's just not a strong enough superlative. A singer of
boundless elegance and mirth, who, in the wink of an eye
or the flutter of a feather, is as generous as she is gifted,
Julie Wilson knows no equal. In a special two-week engagement
she premieres a brand new show featuring songs she's never
performed (several of which are by contemporary composers),
with a mix of old favorites. The Nebraska native, who first
starred on Broadway in "Kiss Me Kate" and originated
the role of Bianca in London in 1951, is joined by longtime
music director Christopher Denny. "Julie Wilson at
The Metropolitan Room" performs eight shows only,
on two consecutive Wednesdays through Saturdays -- June
13, 14, 15, 16, 20, 21, 22, 23, all at 8pm. (Cover $ 25)
