15-YEAR OLD JUDY BUTTERFIELD RETURNS TO THE EMPIRE PLUSH ROOM TO PERFORM JUDY SINGS JUDY: SONGS OF A YOUNG GARLAND AND CELEBRATE THE RELEASE OF HER PREMIER CD PRODUCED BY FYNSWORTH ALLEY

Judy ButterfieldSan Francisco native Judy Butterfield, a sophomore at Urban High School, is making a return engagement at the Empire Plush Room to perform Judy Sings Judy: Songs of a Young Garland September 2 at 8pm, September 3 at 8pm and September 4 at 5pm. A special young people’s matinee (21 years old and over must be accompanied by a minor) has been added September 3 at 2pm.

The San Francisco Chronicle hails Ms. Butterfield as a young entertainer “on her way toward the rainbow” reminiscent of “a mix of Elizabeth Taylor and Scarlett O’Hara.” Robert Lee Hall of the Piedmont Post describes Judy Sings Judy as an “impeccable show” and ranks Ms. Butterfield “among the best cabaret singers in the business.” A protégé of Andrea Marcovicci, “Queen of Cabaret”, Judy made her New York debut at Town Hall as part of the Fifteenth Annual Mabel Mercer Cabaret Convention in 2004 and premiered Judy Sings Judy at the Plush Room in April 2005.

Ms. Butterfield recently appeared in A.C.T.’s production of “Shed a Little Light: The Music of James Taylor.” Her performances include Juliet in “Romeo and Juliet,” the Baker’s Wife in “Into the Woods,” and A.C.T.’s “A Christmas Carol.” In Judy Sings Judy: Songs of a Young Garland, Ms. Butterfield brings her own distinct voice and wonderful gift for storytelling to the stage as she illuminates the world in which Ms. Garland began her career. This magical show is a journey from Grand Rapids Minnesota to Hollywood; from MGM to somewhere over the rainbow.

In collaboration with acclaimed Cabaret Director Clifford Bell and with the incomparable support of Ken Muir, musical director, Judy Sings Judy is a joyful celebration of this legendary performer’s early and most memorable work.

Mr. Bell known affectionately as “Lawrence of Cabarabia,” is one of the most prolific directors in the cabaret field. Credits include “Direct From Broadway” featuring Tony Award winners Debbie Gravitte (“Jerome Robbins’ Broadway”) and Michael Maguire (“Les Miserables”). He has produced many leading cabaret artists including local favorites Sharon McNight, Shelly Markham, and Wesla Whitfield at the world famous Cinegrill at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles.

Mr. Muir, described by The New York Daily News as “a breathtaking pianist,” will join Judy as Musical Director. Mr. Muir has appeared numerous times at the Plush Room, having played piano and provided critically acclaimed arrangements for each of Paula West’s first three CDs.

Fynsworth Alley is home to some of the most treasured recordings from the worlds of Broadway Musical Theater, Instrumental Jazz and The Great American Songbook.

Fynsworth artists include: Donna McKechnie, Bettey Buckley, Rita Moreno, Petula Clark, Maureen McGovern and Stephen Swartz.

Judy will be joined on stage by special guest Reed Campbell for a tribute to the beloved performing team of Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland. Reed Campbell is a sophomore at St. Ignatius Preparatory School in San Francisco. An eight year member of the San Francisco Boys Choir he has performed with Musical Theater Works, The San Francisco Symphony and The San Francisco Opera.
